Family fun

This weekend we had a family adventure in Gwynedd, North Wales. The whole Salsbury clan went (Mother & Father Salsbury, brother dearest, and my small child), and we were also joined by our good chum Emma, who flew in from Northampton, as well as Leonie’s dumb-ass boyfriend Tom, and my other half Mike.

We hired a fabulous house in Machynlleth, called Penryhn, which could only be described as stunning. Obviously, it didn’t take long for us to chav it up and make it look like a bunch of squatters had moved in.

The theme for the weekend quickly became trying to scare Max; with Emma, Mike and myself taking any opportunity to jump out on him, sometimes launching a strategically planned three-prong attack. By the end of the weekend, Mother & Father Salsbury had joined in with this fun and made several, albeit shite, attempts to scare everyone.

Our first adventure was to the delightful Italianesque village of Portmeirion, just outside of Porthmadog. Somewhere I had been wanting to visit for many a year, I wasn’t disappointed (although Mike was slightly baffled by the place and kept asking ‘why?’). With its charming colourful buildings, it sits majestically on the seafront of the Llyn Peninsula.

On the second day, myself and Mike took ourselves off in search of another Italian frivolity; this time an abandoned miniature Italian village in the garden of a random cottage on the hillside of Corris

We followed this with a visit to King Arthur’s Labyrinth (also in Corris), where we went on an underground boat journey through the caves and were treated to the story of King Arthur. I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone who is claustrophobic, but we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Knackered from our day of exploring the day before, the others opted to spend the morning seeing what Machynlleth had to offer (I think they were slightly disappointed). We met back at the house in the afternoon and myself and Mike joined the kids in the hot tub.

By the end of the weekend, we were all sick of the sight of  Max  each other and couldn’t wait to get home. But we’d all had a splendid weekend, mainly spent eating and drinking, and trying to scare each other.

There was lots more to do in and around the area, but we didn’t want to take too much time away from the eating and drinking element of the weekend, so choose to keep our activities to a minimum. And if anyone is looking for a party house in Wales for a large group of people, you can’t go wrong with Penryhn.
