The Devil's in the detail

This weekend's adventure took me once again into Wales - this time to Devil's Bridge Falls in Ceredigion. As brother dearest was away, I had no choice but to drag along my long-time chumly Phil.

I picked Phil up at 10.20am and was kept waiting around while he fart-knocked about, smoking fags.

After a mere 2 minutes on the road Phil started whining like a little girl, wanting to stop for coffee. Realising his incessant whingeing wouldn't stop until he got his caffeine, we pulled over at the Co-op.

Finally setting off again on our journey, we managed to drive 20 minutes further down the road before Phil now wanted to stop for a fag to go with his coffee. So we pulled over at Kington Cemetary and admired the graves. It was a lovely day for the dead.

Back on the road again, we were finally able to continue our journey with no more interruptions. However, when we reached our location, Phil now demanded a beer before we walked around the Falls. So after parking up the motor in the onsite car park, which is free, we wondered down to the Hafod Hotel so he could get his alcohol fix. The hotel was really busy, and we eventually managed to grab a table in the sun where we supped our beverages (I had a coffee because I'm civilised).

One useful thing did come out of our pit stop - we came up with an idea for a new dating app which we're going to call Bungle (although Phil wants to name it Bungld - without the 'e'). The idea behind it being a dating app for sad losers who don't have any success on Tinder and the like (this may or may not have something to do with Phil's recent failure on the Hinge app). Rather than 'super liking' someone, you would 'super bungle' them. And if you matched with someone, you would receive a message saying you'd 'bungled'. Phil is going to start developing the app straight away.

Once Phil had had his alcohol fix, we finally made it into Devil's Bridge Falls. It cost us £4 each to get in, however top tip if you're thinking of visiting, they have a 10% discount voucher on their website, meaning we saved a whopping 80p.

The first thing you see is the bridge, upon a bridge, upon a bridge, and this is apparently where El Diablo himself lives - although he wasn't at home when we were there (probably up to no good somewhere).

You follow a winding path down through the woods, which has various viewpoints along the way where you can look out over the valley below and catch glimpses of the waterfall (which is enormous). A word of caution, the ground is exceedingly uneven under foot and there are lots of steps, so anyone who struggles with walking on anything other than flat even surfaces (I'm talking to you Mother Salsbury) should avoid visiting, unless you want to run the risk of being reduced to a crumpled bone heap. There is one flight of ridiculously steep steps which screamed out 'certain death'.

At the bottom of the Steps of Death, you get a great view of the waterfall in all its glory, and a rather peculiar bridge spanning a gorge. Slightly afeared of crossing, but with nowhere else to go, we bravely crossed to the other side, with absolutely nothing eventful happening. Turns out the bridge is actually quite sturdy.

From here, the only way is up (as Yazz once sang), and you have to climb an endless amount of steps all the way to the top. There are several viewing points of the waterfall along the way, one of which spews a fine mist of water over you (not good if you have hair prone to frizzing like mine).

It truly is one of the most amazing waterfalls I have ever seen (and as anyone who's read my previous posts knows, I've seen a fair few).

After a tiring climb to the top, which brings you out by the Hafod Hotel, Phil wanted to have yet another beer, however I put my foot down with a firm hand and wanted to head home forthwith for my Sunday dinner at Mother & Father Salsbury's. So we jumped in the motor and headed for home.

Devil's Bridge Falls is an awesome place to visit, but be warned the walk is not for those who are rubbish at walking.  It's about a 1.45hr drive from Hereford, but it's probably not so far from places which are closer to it.
